PHOTOGRAPH: Laying tram lines in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui
|
Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of men laying tram lines in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. The view looks at two men using pick-axes on a section of the road which has been dug up in preparation for the installation of the tram tracks. A horse and card is parked outside St Pater's Anglican Church on the opposite side of the road, with The Government Insurance Office and other business visible beyond. St. Peter's Church was later relocated to Gonville. The photo is mounted on thick green card. Whanganui became the first provincial town to have a tramy way. Work began in December 1908 and the first tram began service the following year. By 1912, 12 trams were operating around the city. The last tram service was on 24 September 1950, when the transport system was replaced by buses.
