PHOTOGRAPH: Laying tram lines in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui
|
Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of men working on the tram lines in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. The surface of the road has been dug up and is thick layers of gravel. A large team roller is parked to the left, with a group of men with picks and shovels working on the section behind it. A man wearing a suit watches them. Businesses line the avenue, including The Marble Bar, Harnishes Purest and Best Sweets, and Nettleship and Sons shops. The photo is mounted on thick green card. Whanganui became the first provincial town to have a tramy way. Work began in December 1908 and the first tram began service the following year. By 1912, 12 trams were operating around the city. The last tram service was on 24 September 1950, when the transport system was replaced by buses.
