A black and white photograph of S.S "Kappin" unloading cargo at Whanganui Wharf. A large vehicle with a wide front roller and two narrower wheels at the back stands to the right, with a driver under the canopy looking over his shoulder towards the berthed vessel. Several cartons and sacks are loaded onto the whharf, with a large sign reading "Smoking Prohibited". A railway carriage stands close to the edge of the wharf, with the mast of the ship itself visible behind it.
